Discover two works by John Singer Sargent displayed in the place they were painted.
Returning to Ightham Mote is Young Lady in White, Sargent’s portrait of 17-year-old Elsie Palmer, whose family rented the house in the late 19th century. During their stay, her mother, ‘Queen’ Palmer, entertained the leading literary and artistic figures of the day such as actress, Ellen Terry, and author, Henry James.
The exhibition explores this colourful period of Ightham Mote’s history. It also includes Sargent’s A Game of Bowls, which portrays members of the Aesthetic Movement playing bowls in the gardens.
