Dresden: The Jewel of Saxony

Tour | Dresden

5 – 9 October 2011

There will be a wonderful five-day tour of Dresden. Situated on the River Elbe, the German city has been skilfully restored and boasts some of the finest Renaissance and Baroque architecture of the 18th century when it was known as the 'Florence of the North'. It was largely the legacy of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (1670-1733) who bought a huge number of works of art, and commissioned extravagant buildings such as the Zwinger Palace.

After arriving in the aftertoon, the first day will include a short orientation tour of the city and a visit to Pfund's Molkerai, a spectacular old dairy selling over 100 varieties of cheeses. Then, check in at the Maritim Hotel.

Day two: A guided tour of the Old Masters' Gallery at the spectacular Zwinger Palace which boasts seminal works by Raphael, Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt. Then, a walking tour of Dresden's historic centre to include Semper's Opera House, the rebuilt Frauenkirche, the Royal Palace, the Procession of Princes and The Old Market Square.

Day three: A day trip to Meissen, a delightful medieval town on the River Elbe and home to the world renowned porcelain factory. Then, a walking tour of the town to include the Cathedral, and the Albrechtsburg Castle. A paddle steamer will provide the transportation back to Dresden.

Day four: A guided tour of the Green Vaults, a dazzling display of jewellry, porcelain, and precious objects of the late Renaissance. Free time in the afternoon.

Day five: A visit to the newly opened New Master's Gallery of 19th- and 20th-century paintings which features works by Caspar David Frederick, Max Liebermann, and Otto Dix. There is also the Sculpture Collection to visit with many antique sculptures, Rodins and much more. The flight back to Heathrow is scheduled to arrive at 5.05pm.
