Bristol Museum & Art Gallery displays Constable's The Hay Wain as part of the National Gallery's 'National Treasures' bicentenary celebrations.
Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is showing Constable's masterpiece The Hay Wain, on loan from the National Gallery as part of their 200th birthday celebrations, sharing 12 of the nation's most iconic paintings across the UK.
The Hay Wain by John Constable was painted in 1821 and widely recognised as one of the most iconic paintings in British art. Although it looks like quite a conservative painting through contemporary eyes, it was considered a radical work of art during its time for its use of bright green, flashes of red, broad brushstrokes, and its attention to the realistic representation of the clouds. It also had a huge influence on French Romantic artists such as Géricault and Delacroix.
