A new body of photographic works by Terence Lane, exploring the depths of Sherwood Forest.
First recorded in 958CE*, Sciryuda was the name given to Sherwood Forest by the Vikings and translates as ‘wood belonging to the shire’. Terence Lane has been exploring Sherwood Forest for most of his life, developing a deep, decades-long relationship with this ancient forest. This exhibition offers a thoughtful reflection on a unique habitat, with sensitively produced black and white images by this self-taught, Nottinghamshire-based photographer.
Capturing the eerie atmosphere of the early or late half-light combined with mist or fog, or the sublime beauty of the breeze passing through spindly birch branches and delicate leaves, the viewer is taken off the beaten track and towards a more personal and subjective experience of the forest.
Terence Lane is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
*CE stands for Common Era which is a neutral term for what is often called AD or Anno Domini, a Latin phrase meaning “in the year of our Lord”.
Sciryuda is part of the FOREST season of exhibitions and events at Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery and Newstead Abbey for Summer 2025.
