A Turner masterpiece comes to Newcastle for the National Gallery's 200th anniversary celebrations
The Laing Art Gallery celebrates the National Gallery's bicentenary with Turner: Art, Industry & Nostalgia, featuring J.M.W. Turner's renowned work, The Fighting Temeraire. The exhibition explores the rise of industrialisation in Britain, focusing on the North East's rich shipbuilding heritage.
Turner's masterpiece depicts the HMS Temeraire's final journey in 1838, pulled by steam tugboats manufactured on Tyneside. Over 20 Turner works will go on display, alongside artworks by other artists including Tacita Dean and L.S. Lowry. Divided into sections, it delves into Turner's life, the Temeraire's role, steamboats, and the ongoing portrayal of industrial landscapes in art.
Turner's iconic painting is on loan from the National Gallery in London as part of their 200th anniversary celebrations, touring 12 major artworks to 12 museums and galleries throughout the UK.
