The Zurbarans and The Lindisfarne Gospels
Visit | Bishop's Palace
Wednesday 4 September 2013
The collection of paintings by Francisco Zurbaran in the Bishop's Palace have received much publicity thanks to the almost miraculous intervention of one man, Jonathan Ruffer. Mr Ruffer's interest has sparked off a resurgence of this unique complex. It has received a £1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will be used to transform this little known ecclesiastical site into a major heritage venue and cultural destination.
In the afternoon the trip continues to Durham to see the Lindisfarne Gospels which are temporarily on display in the Library adjacent to the Cathedral. the Gospels are a unique treasure of which Northern England should be immensely proud. Accompanying the display are artefacts contemporary with the Gospels.
This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
