An exploration of modernity, colonialism and fascism through the lens of death
Aria Dean's UK debut explores the profound connection between death and modernity on conceptual and material levels.
The exhibition includes two artworks related to the artist’s investigation into this relationship: Abattoir, U.S.A.! and Vitrine. The former is an immersive film installation using 3D graphics, echoing a virtual slaughterhouse, drawing parallels to violence against Black Americans. Dean expands the analogy to encompass broader aspects of industry, colonialism and fascism. Vitrine*, meanwhile, presents us with empty glass cases marked with branded words, emphasising the absence of a body.
Dean, influenced by philosopher Georges Bataille, critiques representational systems and challenges societal boundaries by pushing the image and idea of the slaughterhouse from the outskirts and into a central focus point of the exhibition.
