Lecture: 'The St Albans Psalter' by Dr Jane Geddes, Hereford
| Holmer Parish Centre
The St Albans Psalter is a vivid illuminated manuscript made in the 12th century for a feisty anchoress, Christina of Markyate. It was a gift from her teacher, friend, patron and, according to gossip, her lover Abbot Geoffrey of St Albans. The book illustrates the themes of the psalms, but coded into the illustrations and text are particular features which refer to the relationship between the abbot and his 'beloved girl'. The talk explains how these pictures throw light on Anglo-Saxons and Normans, nuns and monks shortly after the Conquest. For a preview take a look at www.abdn.ac.uk/stalbanspsalter.
