Interrogating archival photographs and objects that centre a Western history of decolonialisation through alteration, the artists Ffion Denman, Nelly Ating, Audrey Albert, and Ariella Aïsha Azoulay consider the role that galleries and institutions play in the public discourse and interpretation of history.
For the second instalment of our series Interventions: Gallery Reset, we invited artist and researcher Nelly Ating to co-curate an exhibition exploring the possibilities of ‘reimagining’ photographic archives. This led to the conception of Alteration, an exhibition showcasing four experimental and evolving projects using archives and archival images to question and challenge the politics of identity, heritage, land rights and imperialism.
Presented in this exhibition are ongoing personal investigations by Nelly Ating, Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, Audrey Albert and Ffion Denman that consider the role galleries and institutions can play in the public dialogue and interpretation of history.
