This exhibition has now closed, find out what else is going on at The Harley Gallery

This exhibition documents circus life, from backstage ordinariness to sequinned spectacle.

Photographer Peter Lavery is best known for his advertising work, but for the last 50 years he has also been photographing circus performers around Britain.

All shot on a plate camera, the work portrays an impressive collection of circus subjects; intimately detailed photographs that expose moments of ordinariness in extraordinary lives.

Lavery has had an enduring interest and passion for the subject since dropping in on a small indoor circus in his home town of Wakefield in 1968.

This exhibition celebrates both 250 years of circus and Lavery’s five-decade-long fascination with it.
