Chelsea Physic Garden

Tour | Chelsea Physic Garden

Tuesday 31 May 2011 - 12:30 until 15:00

In 1673, the Society of Apothecaries founded this garden to promote the study of botany in relation to medicine, then known as ‘physic’. The location was chosen because its proximity to the river created a microclimate that helped plants survive harsh British winters. It is the second oldest botanic garden in England, it still fulfils its functions of research and conservation. The Pharmaceutical Garden is an area displaying plants used in current medicinal practice, and the Garden of World Medicine is Britain’s first garden of ethnobotany (study of plant uses by people of diverse ethnic origin). After a two-course set lunch in the covered outdoor café, members will enjoy
a privately guided tour of this beautiful walled garden – an oasis of peace in the heart of London.
