Northamptonshire is a landscape of steeples,
ironstone, great estates and houses. This visit looks at a fascinating variety
of churches, houses and gardens. Althorp, Deene Park and Drayton are three of
the grandest houses in Northamptonshire, all inhabited by the families who built
them. Canons Ashby, in contrast, is a more modest, but delightfully atmospheric
manor house. Cottesbrooke, Kelmarsh and Stanford were built by the Smiths of
Warwick, England's most famous family of craftsmen-architects, in the forty
years after 1695. Coton Manor and Cottesbrooke have award-winning gardens.
Lowick church is a 'hidden masterpiece of English Perpendicular'; Stanford, with
its fine woodwork and glass, is crammed with monuments of the Cave family.
Lyveden New Bield is a remarkable Elizabethan garden folly.
