The church of St Martin in Blackheath is an
outstanding example of 19th century Victorian Arts and Crafts architecture. Its
walls are decorated with unique murals depicting the life of Christ, and were
painted by the American born artist, Anna Lea Merritt. However, the murals
are in need of cleaning and restoration in order to protect them from future
deterioration, and an appeal has been launched. Olive Maggs, an art
historian and Surrey University lecturer, lives in Blackheath and has offered to
give a tour and talk to Art Fund members.
