Lecture: Mamluk Vessels Made for the European Market

'Verify if you had money in the bone of your leg, you would break it off to buy these things', bewailed a poor Italian pilgrim when he saw the vessels for sale in the Damascus markets in the mid-14th century. Syrian craftsmen responded by producing vessels which were specially adapted, in form as well as decoration, for non-Muslim customers. Some of the grandest families in Europe owned and cherished these luxury wares, displaying them proudly within their palaces.

Islamic art specialist Rachel Ward will trace the growth of this trade and response it elicited from European crafstmen keen to compete with the exotic imports.
