Art as Protest

22 July - 26 August 2026
2:30–4pm
Included in general admission

A creative workshop exploring fashion as a tool for activism, identity and self-expression.

Art as Protest is a bold, discussion-led workshop for young people aged 13–18, inspired by the work of Vivienne Westwood.

Taking place in the exhibition and Create Space at The Bowes Museum, the session explores how fashion can be used to challenge ideas, express identity and communicate messages about power, creativity and protest.

Participants will look closely at key pieces in the exhibition, share ideas and respond creatively to Westwood’s rebellious approach. Through collaborative making, young people will help create a striking protest banner to be displayed in the museum.

Sessions run on 22 & 29 July and 5, 12, 19 & 26 August, from 2:30–4pm, offering an engaging summer holiday opportunity to explore fashion, activism and creative expression.

Included in museum admission. Under 18, full time students and carers go free.
