A multi-gallery exhibition honouring one of fashion’s most provocative and imaginative British designers, Vivienne Westwood.
Spanning the early 1980s to 2000s, the show charts Westwood’s extraordinary journey following the rebellious energy of punk from her early partnership with Malcolm McLaren, to her reinvention of historical dress and couture in the 1980s and ’90s.
Featuring rare works from private collections, this ambitious exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore Westwood’s creative process, from mock-up calico toiles to digitally deconstructed garments. Complete ensembles are presented chronologically alongside historic objects from The Bowes Museum’s collection, revealing the dialogue between tradition and innovation.
A must-see for fashion enthusiasts, design students and lovers of contemporary design, Vivienne Westwood: Rebel – Storyteller – Visionary is the museum’s most ambitious exploration of her work to date.
The exhibition has been developed in collaboration with The Bowes Museum, Peter Smithson and private collectors and is not affiliated with the Vivienne Westwood brand.
