Celebrate Heritage Open Days at The Bowes Museum with two days of free cultural experiences and creative workshops.
Inspired by the 2026 theme, Everyday Histories, visitors are invited to explore the museum's collections through stories of everyday life and work across the centuries. Enjoy guided tours, behind-the-scenes access to the museum's vaults, artist-led making activities, object handling sessions and a self-guided trail created by the museum's Young Volunteers.
The weekend also offers the chance to experience Norman Cornish: A Life in Sketchbooks, celebrating the artist's moving depictions of Durham coalfield communities, alongside a drop-in sketchbook station inspired by his work. Don't miss performances of the famous Silver Swan, plus the opportunity to relax in Café Bowes and explore the museum shop. Free admission, no booking required.
