Exploring the artist's lesser-known works on paper, the exhibition reveals her uncanny ability to make powerful connections with her subjects.

While best known for her frenetic sea portraits and controversial public sculptures, Maggi Hambling has drawn throughout her career.

One of the first to give precedence to her work on paper, this exhibition contains several pieces that have never been seen in public before and which have been loaned directly from private collections and the artist's studio.

Hambling says the challenge when drawing is to '"touch" the subject, with all the desire of a lover’. Here over 40 works – each intimate, sensuous, powerful – make visible her bold ambition.
