Challenging the ‘horned helmet’ stereotype of the Vikings, this show of more than 500 objects comes straight from the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.

A wide-angle view on the Viking existence 1,000 years ago takes in domestic life, death rituals, and the symbolism of Viking ships in this exhibition of objects, new research and hands-on displays.

The Museum will be the only UK venue for this show, which aims to 'challenge our conceptions of what has become a mythical period in Scandinavia'. In recent years archaeological discoveries have shed new light on Viking civilization, and this exhibition tells the story through unique objects that have been rarely viewed outside Scandinavia.

Don't miss

Some exquisite craftsmanship takes centre stage, including jewellery, glassware and textiles. Highlights include the earliest known Scandinavian crucifix; a series of exquisitely wrought silver pendants representing the pagan Norse gods; and a meditative bronze figurine generally accepted to be a representation of the god Frey.
