Coach trip to the Castle of Mey

| The Castle of Mey

Leaving from Inverness by private bus, with pickup stops en route, the first destination is Golspie to view a mural called Birds on a Sutherland Estuary by Archibald Thorburn (1850-1935). In his day he was a Natural Historian and Bird Artist of some reputation and his illustrations are still in print. This mural had a chequered history as it was originally on a wall of a lodge on an estate in Sutherland. This said lodge was demolished but the painting was rescued and restored.

Coffee in Helmsdale with a brief visit to Timespan will be followed by lunch at Caithness Horizon, Thurso where there will be a chance to see some of the plant collections of Robert Dick. A local baker, he was also a friend of Hugh Miller, Cromarty and a passionate botanist. The day concludes with a Champagne Reception at the Castle of Mey and a guided tour of the castle and gardens.
