Bringing together children’s clothes and accessories, alongside paintings, toys and furniture.

First Steps in Fashion: Children’s Clothes Through History reveals how children's clothes have reflected changing ideas about childhood, fashion and identity.

Alongside these historic garments, local stories bring the exhibition closer to home, including clothing from Milner’s department store in Middleham and an 18th-century boy’s outfit discovered in an attic nearby in Darlington. The exhibition also explores the memories and emotions sewn into children’s clothes, and what those personal belongings can tell us about growing up.
