Bringing together paintings, works on paper and objects from three major UK collections.

The Bowes Museum, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village present Unquiet Earth: Labour and Landscapes.

Featuring artists and thinkers including J. M. W. Turner, George Frederic Watts, Joséphine Bowes, Luke Howard and Marianne North, Unquiet Earth: Labour and Landscapes explores two centuries of changing relationships between people, place and the natural world.

Charting a line from the Industrial Revolution to today’s ecological crisis, this exhibition traces a world transformed by industry, science and shifting attitudes to land and resources. Early concerns about pollution and environmental protection sit alongside the legacies of empire and unequal land use, leading to today’s questions of restoration and stewardship.

This exhibition is part of Going Places, a major new Art Fund programme of exhibitions touring across the UK.
