Sámi artist Hilde Hauan Johnsen has travelled from Sápmi, Norway, in the Arctic region to show her artwork in RAMM’s exhibition Living Labyrinths: Art and Fungi. For Hilde’s first public talk in the UK, she discusses her fungi-dyed textiles alongside a philosophical approach to making and ecology with Exeter-based artist Amy Shelton.

Hilde is a textile artist based in Northern Norway whose artistic practice is rooted in the land where she lives. Johnsen works with natural dyes from foraged plants and fungi. She uses these materials to interrogate the concept of national borders. In Johnsen’s work, natural dyeing becomes a way of holding landscape and memory together.

Amy Shelton is a visual artist and founder of Honeyscribe, a visual arts charity that leads creative projects centred on people, plants, and the natural world. Amy creates botanical artworks of plants which she gathers and preserves. By collaborating with other specialists, each artwork illuminates a specific locality, highlighting the relationships between biodiversity, human and environmental well-being.
