Sean Scully: 1970
10 February – 28 May 2018
This retrospective of the work of artist Sean Scully looks at his continued fascination with stripes and the spaces in between.
Presented across the Laing Art Gallery and the Hatton Gallery, this significant survey of the work of twice Turner Prize shortlisted artist Sean Scully demonstrates his mastery of post-minimalist abstraction.
It revisits two seminal sites in his career – Newcastle and Liverpool (Scully studied fine art at Newcastle University from 1968 to 1971) – and explores the development of his distinctive style, from the confidence of his earlier works to more recent pieces.
Now in his seventies, Scully is a respected name in contemporary art. His works can be found in the collections of many major museums worldwide, including Tate Modern, the Smithsonian in Washington, DC and the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid.
