The Artist and the Sea
26 September 2015 – 8 May 2016
Featuring painting, drawing, prints, photography and sculpture this exhibition reveals the myriad of ways artists have been inspired by the sea.
A simultaneous source of wonder, industry and danger, the sea appears in many different guises; as the setting for important historic events – such as the Battle of Trafalgar or the arrival of King George IV into Leith harbour in 1822 –, as a part of the daily experiences of coastal communities or in its elemental state as a natural environment.
Featured are examples of painting, drawing, print, photography and sculpture by artists such as John Bellany, William McTaggart, Joan Eardley and Elizabeth Ogilvie.
