Bloomsbury at Berwick and the Saxons in Sussex

Visit | Berwick Church

Tuesday 9 August 2011 - 11:30 until 13:00

There will be a tour of Berwick Church which houses murals by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, both members of the illustrious Bloomsbury Group. Grant and Bell used their friends and local people to pose for them as models for their mural which depicts the life of Christ set against a background of Britain ravaged by World War Two. Linda Hall, the curator, will explore the themes and imagery of the mural. After lunch, a visit to Alfriston Church will follow. Alfriston Church was built in the 14th century and lies on an old Saxon burial ground where it is believed that the Saxon Christian St. Lewinna was killed.
