Die Kinderspiele (Children’s games) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, shows every type of game and toy he could think of.
These games were played by children for hundreds of years, only to be superseded by books and board games in the early 19th century and mechanical toys and film in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Join curator Cas on a stroll through this famous painting and the toys it’s depicting, with the opportunity to have a go with some replicas of those toys from the Tudor to Victorian era!

Come to see the newly opened North Hertfordshire Museum. We have four galleries for you to visit: explore the Discovering North Hertfordshire Gallery, which deals with the history of the district from geological times to the present day; our Exhibition Gallery has regularly changing exhibits; discover how people’s lives have changed over thousands of years in the Living in North Hertfordshire Gallery; see the football collection, objects from all around the world, items from our art collections and animations of local folklore tales in the Terrace Gallery; view artworks in the Arches Gallery, part of the Terrace Gallery. We have a shop where you can buy gifts and local souvenirs, and a cafe serving a variety of food, and hot and cold drinks. Admission is free.
