Housed in the former Peak Hydropathic Hotel, the museum was founded in 1891.

It holds regionally important collections of geology and archaeology, including archives and fossil records. The fine art collection, dominated by 19th- and 20th-century watercolours, oils and prints, includes works by Sir Frank Brangwyn, Marc Chagall and Edgar Chahine. There are three galleries hosting a programme of exhibitions, mostly of work by contemporary artists.

Opening times

Open Tuesday to Friday with bookable time slots.

Available slots are between 10am - 12pm and 2pm - 3pm

1. To help us manage the museum with social distancing measures, please book a visit in advance. We have "Individual" and "Group (2-6)" tickets available.

2. We have set up 30-minute arrival slots. Please arrive at your allotted time or you will lose your booking.

3. Please bring your booking confirmation.

4. Face coverings are to be worn by visitors through the entirety of their visit unless medically exempt or under the age of 11.

5. There is a one-way system through the galleries with frequent hand sanitiser stations and assistance from staff.

6. Please note that public computers and children's activities have been temporarily removed. The gift shop is temporarily closed whilst protective screens are being fitted.

7. Please do not visit if you are feeling unwell.
