From hairdressers in Forest Hill to the global hair trade, explore the fascinating and complicated world of hair around the world.

This innovative exhibition highlights the quality of hair as a material, demonstrating how it is used for everything from jewellery and dresses to armour and environmental protection. Objects, imagery and works of art on display will explore our complicated relationship to hair both on and off our heads, why we care so much about our hair and how hair is intertwined with societal expectations and our relationships to others.

Discover contemporary visual artists, filmmakers, designers and members of the public using hair to tell intimate, surprising and wide-ranging tales, demonstrating the unexpected possibilities hair possesses.

Vast anthropological collections follow the journey of global hair cultures, while exciting new works such as an installation by Korantema Anyimadu explore hair in contemporary society – the artist’s work investigates the experiences of Black women and non-binary people in relation to their hair.

Put substance ahead of style and unlock the untold stories of hair beyond washing, combing and cutting.

Art Fund is supporting the MAGNET network, providing a grant for the first collaborative exhibition tour of Hair: Untold Stories. The exhibition will also tour to Museums Sheffield and Tullie House in Carlisle.
