The work depicts Prince's Docks on the River Clyde which was equipped with hydraulic cranes and sheds to cater for the cargo trade.

The cranes and ships have an imposing presence but we do not see anyone working on them. The figures are atypically large and appear to be between jobs or engaged in conversation.
