The strap fitting is a high status object, to be associated with a royal rank in Anglo-Saxon society.

The fitting was functional and would have been attached to the suspension straps of a sword or seax scabbard where they tightened the scabbard suspension loop.

Provenance

Discovered by a metal detector user near Dorchester and declared Treasure in 2003.
