Matthew Boulton involved himself in various business ventures, beginning with the firm Boulton & Fothergill.

The firm's business operated on two main sites, the manufactory at Soho in Handsworth and premises in the centre of Birmingham, where this pattern book is believed to have come from. The articles manufactured included buttons, buckles, silver and plated ware, ormolu and clocks. The pattern book is one of only seven still in their original format.
