For example, January depicts a rising sun, auspicious subject of the New Year, with a pair of sparrows beneath a snow-capped branch; June depicts a carp arching and leaping up a mountain waterfall, a symbol of perseverance and the virtues of the determined warrior; and October depicts a deer standing beside an autumnal red maple.
