Sueño y Mentira de Franco (Dreams and Lies of Franco) by Pablo Picasso

Series of 3 proof states, 1/4, 4/5 and 5/5 (from a suite of 18 etched scenes on two plates).

Etching & aquatint on paper
Each 38.5 x 57 cm
Art Fund grant:
£8,000 ( Total: £17,000)

Frederick Mulder

The series demonstrates the significant changes made by Picasso during the work. The 5th state includes for the first time four additional scenes etched in quite a different style in response to the bombing of Guernica on 26 April 1937. The scathing satire and spoof mythology are replace by a more direct expression of the horrors of innocent slaughter.
