One of two landscapes from a set of eight executed as illustrations for Sir Walter Scott's 'The Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland' (1819-1826).
The ruin of the castle basks in the sunset, haunted by its glorious past as a hunting lodge. The grant is for two paintings, the other one is 'Tantallon Castle'.
