The lantern was designed by Hunt to serve as a model for the lantern held by Christ in Hunt's painting 'The Light of the World'.

It is physical evidence of the meticulous working methods of the artist. Manchester owns the second version of the painting.


Thomas Combe, 1797-1872; his wife Martha Combe, 1806-1893; sold by J R Mallam and Son, Oxford, 1894 to John Crossley; then by descent to present owner.
