This tranquil summer scene was painted on the River Wensum, probably near the New Mills at St Martin's at Oak, not far from where Crome lived. Crome's abiding interest in capturing the effect of sunlight and atmosphere can be clearly seen in this work - particularly his use of the drift of smoke from the chimney to provide atmosphere. The order and lucidity of the composition is characteristic of his mature work.
