Ernst, like other members of the Surrealist movement, was interested in the serendipity of 'objets trouvés'.
While spending the summer at Maloja, near Saint-Moritz, with his friend Giacometti, they discovered several granite stones in the water, already smooth and rounded. Ernst transformed the pebble with the decorative use of paint.
Acquired from Ernest by Erno Goldfinger; by descent.
