Portrait of The Hon Mary Lowther
- Art Funded
- 208 x 119 cm
Schalken established a considerable reputation for small genre subjects, usually shown by candlelight, and as a portrait painter. Encouraged by the success of Kneller, he visited England, where no doubt this portrait was painted but he met with little success, partly, it is said, because of his boorish manners.
Strickland Collection, Boynton Hall, Yorkshire, until 1950; sold Sotheby's, November 1978.
