Benedict Nicolson was editor of the Burlington Magazine for just over thirty years, and was well known as an art-historian. He published important monographs on Terbruggen, Joseph Wright of Derby, Georges de la Tour and others, his special interest being painters concerned with the dramatic effects of artificial light.
