In the 18th century East India merchantmen returning to Europe from the East were sometimes blown off their course by Atlantic gales or hurricanes and put into Barbados, the most easterly island of the South Caribbean.
In Barbados, the captains sold part of their cargoes in order to re-victual for the Atlantic voyage.
