The view, painted from rising ground to the south-east, stretches over the river Calder towards the town.

In the foreground a man and his dog stand looking towards the town while cattle and sheep graze peacefully. Near the centre of the painting is the parish church, now the cathedral, surrounded by the brick Georgian buildings characteristic of I8th century Wakefield. Beyond the town we can see the low hills of the Alverthorpe valley. Wakefield Art Gallery is currently closed and will open in 2011 as The Hepworth Wakefield.
