Decorative use of shagreen, a hard, highly-polished material made from skin of sharks and commonly employed in 18th Century for covering small boxes, knife-cases etc.

Here it has been dyed green. 3 vase shaped wells fitted with clear-glass liners. Base covered with the original green silk. Workmanship of English characteristics - suggestions from Matthew Boulton's craftsmen who emigrated to Russia.
