An Elizabethan cup with cover.

The cover has a slender baluster-finial, lobed disc-embossing, repeating design of fruit and foliage, engraved inside with a Tudor rose. Type of cup referred to in Tudor inventories as a Magdalin or Maudlyn Cup because they resemble the vessel containing ointment from 16th century paintings of Mary Magdalen.

Provenance

Mr ECA Byrom, whose family has associations with Lancashire dating back to the time of Edward II and with Manchester from 1615.
