An oval wall-plaque used horizontally with a bracket cartouche at each of the four cardinal points.

On the back are the initials 'ALM' and the date. The grouping of the initials, with the 'L' raised, is similar to that found on 17th century trade tokens. These are normally accompanied by the names of the couple engaged in the particular occupation, so the likelihood is that 'A & M L' were also a husband and wife and the plaques perhaps commemorated their wedding or anniversary.

Provenance

Christie's 1983; Phillip's 1989; American private collection; Jonathan Horne, January 1991.
