Based upon a well known engraving, this small-scale painting depicts in some detail the Battle of Naseby, a key battle in the English Civil War which took place near Daventry.

The opposing armies are shown drawn up before the battle with the captions 'The King's Army' and 'The Rebell Army.' The composition of the painting is greatly enhanced by the hilly, though inaccurate, landscape in which the battle field is depicted.
