This atmospheric painting is by the son of the better-known Atkinson Grimshaw, whose unmistakable style it clearly reflects.

In fact they often collaborated, Louis adding the figures to his father's backgrounds. He specialised in views of London and other towns but his work is rare since he gave up painting in 1905 to become a cartographer with the Manchester Guardian. Wakefield Art Gallery is currently closed and will open in 2011 as The Hepworth Wakefield.
