Calder Abbey was founded in 1134 by William de Meschines.

The abbey was granted to Dr Thomas Leigh by Henry VIII at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This painting is thought to be the earliest depiction of the ruins of the historic medieval monastery showing parts of the building which have since disappeared.

Provenance

Painted for the Senhouse family, Calder Abbey; Thomas Rymer; by descent to Marjorie Rymer Williams, aunt of the vendor.
