Portrait of Dr James Hutton (1756-1823) who is considered to have been the first great British geologist.

Dr Hutton was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine which he later gave up in favour of agriculture. During the later years of his life, he turned his attention to geology, travelling all over England and Wales in search of specimens. Hutton is shown seated at a table with a pile of geological specimens in front of him.
