Allan had a particular interest in costume, in street traders and in itinerant entertainers as he believed these to be the living manifestations of folk culture. The artist departed on the Grand Tour in 1767 and spent ten years there. On his return to Scotland, Allan turned his attention to Scottish subjects in a similar vein.
